Breton Ability Centre is considered a leader in the disability sector in Nova Scotia. Located on the scenic Cape Breton Island, we are committed to supporting individuals with varying abilities achieve their greatest potential. We pride ourselves on being a centre of learning and excellence for our residents and offer a wide variety of individualized programs to help them contribute to and include themselves in our community at large.

In recent years, through much collaboration with our partners and stakeholders, Breton Ability Centre has made a significant shift in how we support and care for our residents. This shift moves us from the medical model of the past towards a person-centered model that creates a customized plan for each resident based on their needs and their abilities.

We strive to ensure that our residents have opportunities to participate in living, learning and working – the same as anyone in our community would. This is achieved through the delivery of innovative programs, like our social enterprises (Best of Cape Breton, Abiliteas Café and the Print Shop), our Learning and Employment Centre, skill development, community partnerships and a number of recreational activities.

Everything we do is with the ultimate goal to help our residents integrate within their community and, when possible, support them in transitioning to community living options. We strongly see ourselves as advocates for our residents and people with varying abilities at large. Through advocacy, robust community partnerships and teaching life skills, we believe we can reduce the stigmas and discrimination our residents face.

We are thrilled to be associated with the Special Needs and the Moving on Projects and for our partnership with the Canadian Union of Postal Workers. This partnership is a shining example of how like-minded organizations can work together to change lives for individuals with varying abilities!
