Head office: Baddeck, Nova Scotia
CUPW originally contracted with Cape Breton’s SpeciaLink: The National Centre for Child Care Inclusion, for the day-to-day operation of the Special Needs Project. Executive Director Dr. Sharon Hope Irwin was one of two principal authors of the union’s study of working parents of children with special needs. When she decided to put more of her energies into research and development, she helped the union find a new home for the project.
Today, it is administered for the union by Family Place Resource Centre in Sydney, Nova Scotia. Family Place is a federally funded, non-profit organization that runs a Community Action Program for children and a Canada Prenatal Nutrition Program in Cape Breton. Three full-time staff work on the Special Needs Project in an office in Baddeck, about 100 kilometres away.
