Breaking through barriers for workers
who have children with special needs

Welcome to Special Needs and Moving On Projects!

Special Needs & Moving On projectsThe Special Needs and Moving On Projects provide resources and support for workers at the post office whose children have disabilities. The projects are available to members of the Canadian Union of Postal Workers and the Union of Postal Communications Employees (Public Service Alliance of Canada). The Special Needs Project is geared to families with young children; the Moving On Project is for adult sons and daughters with special needs. Life is more demanding when you work and have a child with special needs. Learn more about our Special Needs and Moving On projects.

Announcing changes to the Special Needs and Moving On projects

butterfly logo 400   Starting in September 2014 the following changes will take effect:

  • The Special Needs project will cover children up to and including the month they turn 18 years old.*
  • The Moving On project will cover children after their 18th birthday.

Why are we making changes to the age of eligibility?

We recognize that it is challenging for parents of a child with special needs to find appropriate supports as their child moves into the adult world. The move to adult services happens at age 18 in some provinces and 19 in others. It is important that the planning process start long before the child becomes an adult. We think that the support services that Moving On advisors can offer better assists members in the transition for their children to adult support.

When will this change take effect?

This will come into effect September 2014. Prior to September 2014 any existing member whose child is 18 should contact the Project office if they would like to transfer their child to the Moving On project.

Please contact us if you have any questions or concerns.

*Currently children are covered until their 19th birthday.
