Canada Post misleading Canadians about level of services during strike

Ottawa - Canada Post Corporation is misleading Canadians about the quality of mail delivery during the current strike by 2 000 members of the Public Service Alliance of Canada (PSAC).

“We know that mail volumes are down and that there are delays as a result of this national strike,” said CUPW National President Denis Lemelin. “That means people will be going elsewhere for postal services during the Christmas rush and Canada Post will be losing revenues.”

According to reports the union receives from strike locations in each province, CUPW truck drivers cross the picket lines very carefully and very deliberately and take the time to listen to information provided by the strikers.

“It’s hard to believe that an organization such as Canada Post can function normally when it is deprived of more than 2,000 of its employees, says PSAC national president John Gordon.

Gordon says the work PSAC members do at Canada Post is essential to fast and reliable mail delivery service. He is warning Canadians about possible delays in mail delivery when the high volume Holiday period begins in about two weeks.

Gordon welcomes the support of CUPW, PSAC's sister union at Canada Post and he is reminding strikers that they can count on the support of their PSAC brothers and sisters from across the country.

PSAC members are on strike against Canada Post because their employer is trying to impose a new short-term disability system that would be policed by a private insurance company and that would deprive them of their hard-earned sick leave.

The collective agreement between UPCE/PSAC and Canada Post expired on August 31, 2008.  Negotiations began on June 4, 2008. PSAC members voted 88 per cent in favour of strike action against Canada Post.
